Cette salamandre au long corps souple et humide creuse son terrier dans la terre ou entre les rochers. Elle préfère les environnements humides et ombragés et se nourrit principalement d'insectes et de petits invertébrés. Pendant la saison des amours, elle dépose ses œufs au bord de l'eau et passe le reste du temps cachée dans son terrier.

During the breeding season, it comes to the water's edge to lay eggs, and for the rest of the time, it lives sneaking in the burrow.
