Una salamandra dalla pelle umida e un corpo lungo e morbido, che scava cunicoli nel terreno o fra le rocce. Predilige gli ambienti umidi e ombreggiati, e si nutre principalmente di insetti o piccoli invertebrati. Durante la stagione dell'accoppiamento si reca lungo rive di specchi d'acqua per deporre le uova, mentre per il resto del tempo vive acquattata nei cunicoli.

During the breeding season, it comes to the water's edge to lay eggs, and for the rest of the time, it lives sneaking in the burrow.
