Un mammifero dal carattere sociale, con un corpo piccolo e agile dalla lunga coda. Vive in branco, in ambienti desertici e praterie. È solito mantenersi in posizione eretta sulle zampe posteriori, per osservare attentamente l'ambiente che lo circonda, e coopera con i suoi simili per procacciarsi il cibo e fare la guardia per i predatori. Si nutre principalmente di insetti, piccoli rettili e radici; vive all'interno di cunicoli.
