小さな体に針が密生した夜行性の動物。非常に食欲が旺盛で、一晩のうちに体重の3分の1にあたる量を食べることができる。雑食性だが、主に昆虫やその幼虫を食べる。ある村には時折、黄金のリンゴを背中の針に刺して歩き回るハリネズミが現れるという伝説があるという。
