乾燥した環境に生息する夜行性のヒキガエル。一日の大半の時間を地中で過ごす。巣穴を掘ってその中で生活するが、これはシャベル状に発達した力強い後足と頑丈な体のおかげである。雨が降った後や夜間になると、餌を探したり繁殖のために地上に姿を現す。
An amphibian that spends most of its time underground. True to its name, it digs burrows and lives within them, a feat made possible by its shovel-like, powerful hind legs and its solid, sturdy body. It emerges only to seek food or to breed at night or when it rains.
