一般的なショウジョウバエよりも少し大きいハエの仲間で、素早い飛行が特徴。腐った果物や食べ物、動物の死体など有機物がある場所に集まる。主に暖かい季節に活動が盛んになり、強い繁殖力で短期間に群れを形成する。
