小さく痩せた体と細長い尾を持つ社会性哺乳類で、砂漠や草原で群れを成して生活する。後ろ足で立って周囲を警戒する習性があり、仲間同士で協力して餌を探し捕食者を監視する。主に昆虫、小型爬虫類、植物の根などを食べ、巣穴を掘って生息する。
