地面を掘ることに特化した小型の哺乳類。シャベルのような前足と強靭な爪を持つ。視力はあまり良くないが、触覚と嗅覚が極めて鋭敏なため、道を見つけたり獲物を追跡する際に不自由はない。彼らが作る巣穴は土壌に空気を送り込み、昆虫の数を調整するなど、生態系において重要な役割を果たしている。
