小柄だが賢い動物で、昼間は自分で掘った巣穴の中で休み、夜になると外に出て餌を探す。ハムスターとは異なり、巣穴の中に食べ物を蓄える習性があり、穀物や植物の根などを几帳面に積み重ねるその姿には実に感心させられる。
