작은 몸체에 가시가 촘촘히 박힌 야행성 동물. 식욕이 매우 왕성해 하룻밤 사이에 체중의 3분의 1에 해당하는 양을 먹을 수 있다. 잡식성이지만 주로 곤충과 유충을 먹는다. 어떤 마을에는 가끔 황금 사과를 가시에 꽂고 다니는 고슴도치가 돌아다닌다는 전설이 있다고 한다.
