달콤한 것을 좋아하는 새. 인동 덩굴이나 붉은 단풍나무 등 꽃을 피우는 식물에서 나는 수액이나 꿀을 선호한다. 이들의 길고 가느다란 특수한 부리는 단 즙을 빨아들이는 데 최적화돼 있다. 오렌지와 같은 과일도 매우 잘 먹기 때문에 모이통에 담아 두면 수시로 찾아온다고 한다.
