붉은빛을 띠는 광물. 석류석, 홍옥이라 불린다. 불과 피를 닮은 빛이 힘과 권위를 상징해 장신구, 인장 장식에 쓰이며 인기가 높다. 가파른 산악지대 암벽에 불규칙하게 매장된다.
