작고 날씬한 몸과 길쭉한 꼬리를 가진 사회성 포유류로, 사막과 초원에서 무리를 이루어 생활한다. 뒷다리로 서서 주변을 경계하는 습성이 있으며, 서로 협력해 먹이를 찾고 포식자를 감시한다. 주로 곤충, 소형 파충류, 식물 뿌리 등을 먹으며, 굴을 파고 서식한다.
