넓고 두꺼운 몸통과 머리의 큰 뿔이 특징인 대형 딱정벌레. 수컷의 뿔은 싸움과 구애에 사용되며, 힘이 매우 세다. 주로 나무 수액과 과일을 먹는다. 번데기 시기를 거쳐 여름철에 활발히 활동하며, 그 위용과 힘으로 곤충 중 왕이라 불리기도 한다.
