여덟 개의 다리와 두 개의 몸마디로 이루어진 절지동물로, 날개가 없고 거미줄을 이용해 사냥과 생활을 한다. 거미줄은 매우 끈적하고 질겨서 먹잇감을 효과적으로 포획할 수 있으며, 일부 종은 독을 사용해 먹이를 마비시킨다. 숲, 풀밭, 집 주변 등 다양한 환경에 서식하며, 사냥 방식에 따라 그물거미, 장대거미 등으로 나뉜다.
