머리 앞쪽에 길게 발달한 큰 턱이 사슴의 뿔을 닮은 딱정벌레다. 큰 턱은 수컷끼리 힘을 겨루거나 짝짓기를 위해 사용된다. 나무에서 나오는 액을 먹으며, 힘이 세고 날개를 펼쳐 날 수 있다.
