산에서 사는 큰 나방으로, 누에나방보다 커서 날개에 뚜렷한 무늬나 눈 모양의 반점이 있는 경우가 많다. 애벌레는 여러 나무의 잎을 먹으며, 고치를 만들고 번데기를 거쳐 어른벌레가 된다.
