진드기를 먹거나 대형 포유류의 상처를 파고들어 살점을 뜯는 작은 조류. 날카롭고 특수한 부리 덕분에 상처에 노출된 조직을 손쉽게 파먹고 영양을 보충한다. 새지만 어쩐지 기생 생물에 더 가까운 듯한 느낌이다.
