Skill overview

Storm Veil (Wind element Lv.1) is the last and hardest of the four elements to unlock. The signature trait is strong knockback / displacement β€” the moves carry directional storm shockwaves that reposition enemies and interrupt boss heavy charges.

Per-character variants:

  • Kliff β€” Storm Veil: a defensive air barrier that reflects ranged attacks and shoves melee attackers off when they get close. Excellent against bosses with adds.
  • Damiane β€” Storm Dash: a teleport thrust trailing a storm flare that knocks enemies back, opening repositioning space for her rapier combos.
  • Oongka β€” Storm Quake: a greataxe slam summoning a tornado pillar that lifts multiple enemies off the ground and slams them down. Great for both clearing adds and stunning bosses.

Unlike the other three elements, Wind requires Chapter 8 main quest cleared, which makes it effectively endgame content. Two gates:

  • First, in the Chapter 8 main quest "A Fleeting Dream", defeat the boss Lucian Bastier to obtain the Spire of Clockwork Key
  • Then climb Spire of Clockwork itself, complete the Riddle Square flight challenge, and pick up the artifact

This is the longest and most involved of the four element unlocks.

Prerequisites

  • Chapter 8 main quest cleared β€” specifically A Fleeting Dream
  • Spire of Clockwork Key (auto-awarded for clearing A Fleeting Dream)
  • Strong Force Palm + Axiom Force technique
  • Aerial Maneuver (grapple) β€” strongly recommended, dramatically simplifies the spire interior
  • All three earlier elements (Frost / Flame / Lightning) unlocked (recommended)
  • Recommended character level: 45+ (endgame range)
  • Damiane's gear upgraded β€” at least the starter set at +1 enhancement
  • Lucian Bastier weapon recommendation: Golden Vanguard (two-handed spear, Boss #11 Gregor drop)

Step 1: Complete "A Fleeting Dream" (Chapter 8)

A Fleeting Dream is a major Chapter 8 main quest. It's a long story sequence that forces a switch to Damiane's perspective and ends with the Lucian Bastier boss fight.

  • Two health bars β€” clearing the first triggers a transformation into phase 2
  • Phase 1: Lucian is constantly blocking and parrying β€” defense is extreme, don't try to brute-force him. The strategy is bait an attack β†’ punish the recovery frames.
  • Phase 2: post-transformation, frequent teleports. Track his teleport landing spots β†’ predict β†’ strike. He's fast but his teleport endpoints have clear telegraphs.

Recommended build (Damiane)

  • Weapon: Golden Vanguard (two-handed spear), drops from Boss #11 Gregor. Long reach + high thrust damage, particularly strong in phase 2.
  • Armor: Damiane's starter set at +1 to +2 β€” survives the long phase 1 grind.
  • Playstyle: Patience. This boss specifically punishes greedy attacks β€” wait for his guard break β†’ one punish β†’ retreat β†’ wait again.

When Lucian falls, the Spire of Clockwork Key lands in your inventory β€” it's a glowing bronze rune key.

Step 2: Get to Spire of Clockwork

The Spire of Clockwork is in eastern Demeniss, at Breezeblown Knoll. It's a tall tower studded with surface-mounted gears and machinery, visible from a long distance.

Fast-travel to the nearest Demeniss outpost, ride east along the main road, and Breezeblown Knoll appears on the map.

The spire's front door has a giant rune seal. As you approach with the key in your inventory, the game auto-prompts to unlock. Enter.

Step 3: Climb the Spire of Clockwork interior

The interior is a vertical mechanical maze built around rotating gears, counterweight levers, and timed platforms. Step by step:

Action A β€” first lever (ground floor)

Directly in front of you on entering, there's a yellow horizontal lever on the floor. Jump on it to depress it with your weight.

⚠️ The hitbox is fussy β€” the first jump usually doesn't land the press. Try a few different angles. Once it's down, the next section unlocks.

Action B β€” climb the gears to the second floor

To the left is a cluster of large rotating gears that double as platforms.

  • If you have Aerial Maneuver (grapple), hook a metal platform to skip the gear section entirely for a faster climb
  • Without it, ride the gears, jumping from one to the next as they cycle

Action C β€” second lever (mid-level)

Continuing up, you'll reach a gear directly above the first lever with a second yellow switch on it. Climb up and depress it to activate.

Action D β€” twin counterweight tubes (upper level)

After the second lever you reach two large hanging counterweight tubes. They move in opposite directions β€” stand on one and it descends; the other rises.

How to ride: step onto one tube to start it descending and build momentum β†’ time a jump onto the other tube as it rises β†’ ride the upward momentum to the next platform.

Action E β€” clock face ring

Above the counterweight tubes is the clock face room β€” you have to pass through the gaps in the rotating clock teeth. Wait for a gap to align with you, then time a Force Palm through it.

Action F β€” exit to the outer walkway

Past the clock face, you exit the spire through gaps in another rotating disc ahead of you, landing on the outer walkway.

Action G β€” go LEFT to find the elevator button

After exiting, immediately turn left (not right!), follow the walkway around the spire to the left side, and you'll see a button on the wall. Press it to summon the elevator.

Action H β€” elevator to the top

The elevator carries you to the top of the spire. At the summit is the Abyss Gate leading into the Wanderer's Way Abyss cluster.

Step 4: Riddle Square β€” flight challenge

The first node past the Abyss Gate is Riddle Square. Note: despite the name, there's no actual riddle β€” this is a flying time-trial challenge.

Phase 1: Activate the central device

In the center of the square is a circular mechanical device. Walk onto it and use Axiom Force (hold L2 / Tab) to grip and rotate it. The light goes from yellow to blue β€” that means it's activated.

Phase 2: Take off and pass the rings

Stand at the center of the disc, jump and glide. The device will boost you upward through a series of metal rings. Once you're above the square, look east to see more rings extending outward.

Phase 3: Follow the ring loop

Fly the loop following the rings. Wall fans along the way will redirect you β€” don't fight them, let them carry you through the rings. Each ring you clear restores your stamina, so you don't have to worry about falling out of the sky.

This isn't timed β€” going slow is fine, take your time aligning each ring. Missing one is also fine, the fan system loops you back around for another try.

Step 5: Activate the final device & grab the artifact

After the flight challenge, you land back next to the central device. Force Palm down onto it to fully activate it.

The reward sequence triggers: the Abyss Artifact appears on the central pedestal. Pick it up β€” confirmation: Wind Lv.1 unlocked! All three characters now have Wind, and the Axiom Bracelet can imbue any weapon with wind damage. Your final element is in.

Pre-run checklist

  • [ ] Chapter 8 "A Fleeting Dream" cleared
  • [ ] Spire of Clockwork Key in inventory
  • [ ] All three earlier elements unlocked (strongly recommended)
  • [ ] Aerial Maneuver grapple learned
  • [ ] Damiane's starter set at +1 to +2 enhancement
  • [ ] Golden Vanguard two-handed spear (optional but strong)
  • [ ] Full health + spirit potions
  • [ ] Manual save before entering the spire

Common mistakes

  • Trying to enter without the key: only obtainable from clearing the Chapter 8 main quest. No shortcuts.
  • Damiane underleveled vs. Lucian: he's a phase-2 teleport boss, low gear means a wipe. Upgrade armor and grab Golden Vanguard.
  • First lever won't depress: hitbox is fussy, try different angles.
  • Counterweight momentum off: wait for the tube to be near the top of its arc before jumping, not too early.
  • Going the wrong way on the outer walkway: after exiting the spire, immediately turn LEFT, not right. The elevator button is on the left.
  • Fighting the wall fans during the ring loop: let them push you, ride the wind, save your stamina.
  • Force Palm before activating with Axiom Force: you have to grip and rotate the disc with Axiom Force first (yellow β†’ blue light), then Force Palm.

End of the road

With Wind unlocked, you have all four elements: Frost, Flame, Lightning, Storm. The Axiom Bracelet can now slot any element into any weapon, and the foundation of every endgame build is in place.

Suggested next steps

  • Endgame boss farms: the four-element rotation makes a lot of previously brutal bosses much easier. Start with the ones you struggled against.
  • Element combo builds: try Frost β†’ Flame (freeze, then shatter the ice armor with fire) or Lightning β†’ Storm (stun, then knock back) chains.
  • Abyss Gear deep dives: the four elements have strong synergy with specific Abyss Gears from endgame dungeons. See the witch to re-slot and assemble a dedicated element build.

Congratulations on clearing the full element unlock chain β€” you're officially in Crimson Desert endgame.
